Tunneling by Numbers, London,

A habitual user of the Greenwich and the Woolwich foot tunnels, I have developed a particular relationship with those spaces. over time I have come to understand my relationship with the tunnel, it is interesting hearing people deliberately make loud noises as they walk through the tunnel because they want to hear the voices reverberate, and late at night it becomes a way of reassuring themselves.  Noise travels very well through the tunnel because of the tiled surfaces and the shape of the tunnel.  I find myself counting my footfalls as I walk through the tunnel, it is a way of parsing time and I am genuinely interested in the number of steps it takes for me to part through the tunnel.  I have found that is is not the same number of steps each time, let alone the problem of forgetting to count as I walk along and become mesmerised by the tunnel itself.
